My Mission

To hike a different (preferably new) trail with my family every weekend that I am not on call and write about it. There are a lot of great resources available now on the web and with GPS’s that there should not be any issues with finding a different trail to take. I don’t know how many weekends that I am not on call yet but this weekend I am on call so I will be able to spend some time mapping out the first few hikes.

My Children are 5 and 9 and so the trails need to be easy enough for them to travel but have enough to see and preferably have several points of interest POI’s along the way to keep them interested. My ideal trail will be uphill for the first half or so and then downhill on the return loop. I don’t mind trails without loops but especially like not seeing the same terrain twice in the same hike. I know that this isn’t such a big deal and the return view is never the same. But hey since I am laying out my perfect trail why not list this also. Speaking of perfect trails I like trails that follow moving water and have multiple waterfalls.

This summer I look forward to some back pack camping. I am sure there is a better term for that and I will start to use it once I find out what it is. My wife and I have most of the backpacking supplies that we need for this summer from B.C when we would go back packing. (BC Before Children) We have not gone back packing with the entire family and so will need to work out packs and supplies for the children. We have done a lot of car camping but this summer will be the first full family back packing. The good news is we have a lot of time between now and the first camping trip.

Things I still need to work out is what software to use to track the hikes. There are a lot of applications available for the I-phone that have different output options. I currently use Nike+GPS to track my walks but these are viewable only on the Nike web page (or at least I haven’t figured out how to pipe it to something like Google earth. I like the idea of getting a dedicated GPS that supports outputs to various formats but I would like to start with using less expensive / freeware on my i-phone just because I will already have it on me.

On this web page I have set up word press because it was easy to set up and looks easy to use. If I can find out how to pipe my hikes out of the i-phone to some thing that I can post on schneidervill.com then we are all set. For the mean time I will be testing lots of options and maybe borrowing a few GPS’s if you have a suggestion on hikes and hardware please let me know I appreciate your input.

See you on the trail.
